Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged by the FA for allegedly making a racist comment about his teammate Son Heung-min.
During a June interview on Canal 10, Bentancur was asked for a Spurs player’s shirt. He responded with, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too, since they all look the same.”
Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out received numerous complaints about the remark. Bentancur has since apologized to Son, who accepted the apology, saying his teammate “made a mistake.”
The FA’s statement charged Bentancur with a breach of FA Rule E3 for misconduct, citing abusive language with racial implications. He has until September 19, 2024, to respond.
