Real Madrid have agreed to a contract extension with goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, keeping him at the club until 2028, sources told ESPN.

Lunin, 25, stepped up last season when first-choice keeper Thibaut Courtois was out with injury, helping Madrid win both LaLiga and the Champions League. Despite rumors that he might leave after Courtois’ return to fitness, the Ukraine international has decided to stay, extending his contract, which was set to expire in 2025, by three more years.

Negotiations started in March, with Madrid initially offering a one-year extension until 2026, while Lunin pushed for a longer deal. The club was reportedly impressed with his attitude and performances, especially during Courtois’ absence. Lunin made 21 LaLiga starts and eight Champions League appearances, including all the knockout stages up to the semifinals.

Although Courtois reclaimed the starting spot, including in the Champions League final, sources say Lunin is eager to see if he will continue to get playing time. If Courtois remains Madrid’s primary goalkeeper and extends his contract beyond 2026, Lunin may reconsider his future at the club.

His new contract prevents Madrid from losing him on a free transfer next summer, giving them the option to negotiate a transfer fee if he decides to leave. Lunin, represented by agent Jorge Mendes, has reportedly attracted interest from Premier League and Serie A clubs.
