Tottenham are showing an interest in Atletico Madrid’s Mario Hermoso as they look to improve their backline, according to reports.

Tottenham need a new centre-back

Tottenham have, for some time, required reinforcements at centre-back.

Spurs’ previously dominant pairing of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld has now broken up, with the former having departed the club, and the latter now looking some way past his best.

Elsewhere, both Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez can be quite error-prone.

This just leaves Joe Rodon, whose lack of top-flight experience was laid bare on a number of occasions last term.

So, if Spurs hope to get back to finishing in the Premier League’s top-four on a regular basis again, they probably need to bring in some reinforcements at the back.

Tottenham linked with Atletico Madrid defender

Now, as mentioned above, Tottenham look to have identified at least one defender who could improve upon their backline this summer.

That man is said to be Atletico Madrid’s Mario Hermoso.

Hermoso would join Atletico Madrid in July of 2019, departing fellow Spanish side Espanyol for a fee believed to be around £22.5m.

The former Real Madrid youth has since gone on to notch 61 appearances across all competitions for Atletico.

38 of those appearances would come during the 2020/21 campaign as Atleti pipped both Real and FC Barcelona to the La Liga title.

Now, a France-based journalist is reporting that Tottenham are seeking to strengthen in defence and Mario Hermoso is among the players studied by the Lilywhites.

No further details are given, but it is hard to see why Hermoso, who has just won La Liga and has three years left on his current contract, would be interested in joining a Spurs side who only finished 7th in the Premier League last term and, at present, remain without a manger.
