Varane out of Chelsea match

Varane was substituted at the weekend for Real Madrid due to pain in his leg, thought to be caused from fatigue.

The club has now confirmed that Varane has indeed suffered an abductor injury but gave no timeframe.

After the tests carried out today on our player Raphaël Varane by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he was diagnosed with an injury to the right abductor muscles. Pending evolution.

However, with Madrid facing Chelsea this week in the Champions League on Wednesday, the Frenchman will now no longer be able to feature.

Ramos to come in for Varane

The positive news for Real Madrid is that Sergio Ramos will be coming back for the game.

Zinedine Zidane confirmed that Ramos had returned to full-time training having missed the first leg of the tie.

“[Ramos] is training with us and that means he’s able to play too,” Zidane said ahead of Los Blancos’ 2-0 win over Osasuna in which Varane was injured.

“We’ll see what we do when we name the squad, but Sergio is fit and ready to play.”

Who partners Ramos?

Zidane will have a decision to make regarding his back four for the game.

With Dani Carvajal also injured, Alvaro Odriozola will come in as the most natural replacement.

Lucas Vazquez has played at right-back but he too has a serious knee injury and is out for the long-term.

Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez are the two clear choices for Zidane to partner Ramos. Militao scored in the 2-0 win over Osasuna but has been an inconsistent since arriving from Portugal.

Fernandez is an utility option who has played a multitude of defensive positions at the club.

Zidane needs to remain defensively astute with his selection whilst his side must score to avoid going out on away goals.
