Arsenal dropped points at home in the Women’s Super League after being held to a 0-0 draw by an injury-hit Everton side in front of 25,000 fans at the Emirates Stadium. Despite dominating possession, Jonas Eidevall’s team struggled to break down Everton’s resilient defense. The closest they came was a shot from U.S. right-back Emily Fox, which struck the woodwork.
This draw marked Arsenal’s first time failing to win at home against Everton in 11 matches since the WSL’s inception in 2011. For Everton, it was a much-needed boost after a tough start to the season, having lost key players like Italy’s Aurora Galli and Spain’s Inma Gabarro to season-ending ACL injuries. This was their first point of the campaign.
The result was even more frustrating for Arsenal, as title rivals Manchester City secured a comfortable 2-0 win over West Ham earlier in the day. City’s manager, Gareth Taylor, rested key players like last season’s WSL top scorer, Khadija Shaw, and all-time leading scorer Vivianne Miedema, ahead of their midweek clash with European champions Barcelona. Despite this, City still got the job done, with Lauren Hemp and Mary Fowler finding the back of the net. The Netherlands’ Jill Roord also made her first start since returning from an ACL injury, while West Ham had a goal disallowed for offside, though replays suggested Viviane Asseyi was onside.
Elsewhere, Liverpool claimed their first win of the season in dramatic fashion, with Austria’s Marie Höbinger scoring a 95th-minute penalty to seal a thrilling 3-2 victory over Tottenham. Liverpool remain unbeaten after three games, while this was Tottenham’s first defeat of the season.
Promoted Crystal Palace earned their first WSL win, beating Leicester 2-0, thanks to two second-half goals from Annabel Blanchard, including a penalty. Leicester’s winless streak now stretches to 11 league games, with their last victory coming in February.
In the Women’s Championship, leaders Charlton scored two late goals to salvage a 3-3 draw against Sunderland, keeping them a point ahead of surprise package Durham, who won 1-0 at Newcastle. Birmingham and Bristol City also secured wins, while Isobel Goodwin scored four goals for London City Lionesses in a 5-1 rout of Portsmouth.
